42 Things

I turned 42 this year.  And I feel like I’m finally getting my shit together.  I’ve come full circle. I’ve mostly unbecome everything I was never meant to be so I can start becoming the person I’m supposed to be.  I have a much better understanding of my gifts and my flaws.  So this birthday was exciting for me.  It’s been years since I’ve been excited about my birthday.  But this year, I was.  I am proud that I have found the courage to be me. I am grateful for a multitude of blessings in my life. I am excited about what the future may hold.  I’m passionate about what I do for a living.  I’m focused on the good I can give.  I’m in a really good place.

So I wanted to commemorate this year.  I will print an Instax photo of 42 fabulous things that happen this year.  That’s one every 8 or 9 days on average.  Fabulous things don’t happen every day and some fabulous things take up more than one day.  And I often consider some very simple things fabulous (like a sunny day after weeks of rain).  But these photos are going to be a reminder of those times that really add joy to my life, the times I never want to forget.

So here they are:

U2 The Joshua Tree Tour
#1: We travelled to Toronto to see my all-time favourite band play the album that formed me – The Joshua Tree by U2.
#2: Seeing a long-time friend who lives far away. I met her youngest and we gabbed until the wee hours. No matter where we are in the world, this incredible woman is in my heart.

#3: I travelled to Spain to walk part of the Camino. Three weeks of walking and 500 km was nothing short of transformative.

#4: Cruz de Ferro. The Iron Cross. A moment of immense power.  A highlight of the Camino for me.

#5: My last week in Spain, I spent volunteering at the galgo (Spanish Greyhound) rescue from which we got our Abu. This galgo is Eternal, an old fellow of 10 years who was found on the streets protecting two younger dogs. They were all rescued by 112 Carlota Galgos and I was so honoured not only to have met him but to accompany him on his way to his forever family after months of rehabilitation.  The effect that this experience had on my life is almost impossible to put into words.  Hold your head high, Eternal.  You made it, buddy.

#6:  It had been ten years since I’d seen this friend, our lives a wandering odyssey, together, apart and now together again.  After all that has happened, I certainly appreciate how lucky I am to have her still in my life.  (And I also got to meet her son and husband.)

#7: I went to Winnipeg for the wedding of another beautiful, long-time friend who finally found a man strong enough to appreciate and love all of the different kinds of awesome she is.

#8: One of the most important lessons I learned while away in Spain was just how much this fellow means to me. We are both very strong people. But we are much, much stronger together.

#8: While in Winnipeg (for the wedding), I also met up with another long-time friend that I hadn’t seen in six years. It was like we hadn’t missed a day. What did I ever do to deserve such loyal and forgiving friends?

Even if we stopped here my year would be epic enough.  I’m looking forward to finding out what else this 42nd year has to offer.
